The faculty of physical engineering carries out multilevel preparation of experts in specialities (trends): 010701 "Physics" ("Physics"), 020301 "Geology", 210101 "Physical electronics" ("Technical physics"), 230102 "Automated systems of processing of the information and management" ("Computer science and computer facilities"), 200106 "Informational and measuring engineering and technologies" ("Instrument-making").
- the first 4 years of studies on the trends with reception of the bachelor's degree;
- 5-th year - reception of the diploma of the expert,
or 5-th and 6-th year - the magistracy on the trends with reception of the diploma of the master.
Upon their wish the students may have additional pedagogical preparation with assignment of qualification "Teacher" (for masters - "Teacher of the higher school")
Students of all specialities study cycles of socioeconomic and natural-science disciplines. Then separately on specialities the cycles general technical and special disciplines are studied.
On the speciality "Physics" the students receive basic classical university education in physics and mathematics according to state standard. The students are given knowledge on properties of materials, use of the physical phenomena in modern engineering, at creation of new perspective materials and technologies in solid-state electronics and microelectronics. The program of training stipulates mastering of computer technologies, element base of computer facilities, methods of automation of scientific researches and managements of processes. The big attention is paid to studying of foreign language and modern economic concepts.
Students majoring in "Physical materiology" receive knowledge and skills of experimental research of nuclear structure of the condensed condition of substance (crystal, amorphous and liquid), study methods of computer modelling of structure of substance and the physical processes proceeding in it at various influences.
Students majoring in "Solid-state electronics and microelectronics" receive knowledge and skills in physics of semi-conducting, dielectric, conducting and superconducting materials of electronic engineering, on working principles and work of semi-conductor and microelectronic devices, on modern problems of element base of computer facilities, optoelectronics and high-temperature superconductivity.
Spheres of professional work of graduates of the speciality "Physics" are high schools and other educational institutions, scientific research institutes and laboratories, design bureaues and firms, the industrial enterprises and associations. Fundamental natural-science preparation, skills of physical thinking and free possession of computer engineering and information technologies easily, as required, allow graduates to adapt in other fields of activity, too.
Students majoring in "Technical physics" and "Physical electronics" receive knowledge in physics of metals, semiconductors and isolators, on physics and application of plasma, quantum electronics, radio engineering and microelectronics, experimental methods of research, programming and work on computer facilities. Students majoring in "Electronic and ionic technology" study the cycle of disciplines on physical bases of modern technologies, the additional cycle of economic disciplines: management, marketing, etc. On the second specialization of a speciality "Physical electronics" - "Physical principles of analytical instrument making" - the cycle of disciplines on computer facilities, instrument making and means of automation is amplified.
Students majoring in "Computer science and computer facilities" and "Automated systems of processing of the information and management" are studying element base of computer, their working principles, interface to sources of the information and service on the profound basis. A lot of attention is paid to algorithmization and programming at various levels, the theory and methods of management, decision-making and processing of the information. The opportunity of choice up to 30% of studied disciplines is given to the students.
Students majoring in "Geology" receive modern knowledge of a deep structure of the Earth, structure of its atmosphere and ionosphere, the circumterraneous space and Sun-terrestrial connections, get practical skills of research of natural physical fields of the Earth, its gas and plasma environments. Under the supervision of the leading scientists of the Institute of geology students specialize in practical geology and geophysics that successfully allows them to solve problems of mountain geophysics arising at search, extraction, research and enrichment of natural raw materials. The senior students majoring in "Geology" take supplementary courses, perform laboratory, degree and course works in the institute of Geology of the Karelian centre of science.
The speciality "Informational measuring engineering and technologies" assumes mastering of the newest technologies of the computer aided measurements, use of microprocessor engineering in monitoring systems of the industrial, scientific and household equipment, and also accumulation of knowledge and skills for creation of the broad variety of the control and measuring automated complexes for various systems of support scientific, technical and industrial activity that opens ample opportunities for employment of graduates on this speciality on prestigious sites of the modern high technology and computer aided economy and industrial sphere.
The faculty continues training on the 090500 "Open mountain works" speciality within the framework of the trend "Mining". Opening of this speciality was caused by requirements of quickly developing mountain industry of the Republic of Karelia. During training period students study modern technologies of the mining industry. Each academic year students work on probation at mining enterprises. Practical skills are increased through research course and degree projects on open cast mining. Versatile knowledge of geology, mechanics, electrical engineering and other special disciplines is necessary for the future mining engineer, and according to the state standard students receive necessary knowledge.
Upon graduation from the higher school according to the speciality young experts have a guaranteed opportunity of getting a job at mining enterprises of Karelia.
