The chair has been founded in 1990. 20 students are enrolled at the chair annually to study Karelian, Finnish, and Veps languages. The graduates of the chair work as journalists, interpreters, members of staff of scientific bodies, teachers of secondary schools of the republic.

The lecturers from Institute of Language, Literature and History of KSC of the RAS perform the following special courses:

Program of cooperation with foreign and home universities

The chair cooperates with Finnish and Scandinavian universities within the framework of the project "Languages of small peoples of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Russia" (Finnish, Karelian, Veps, Estonian, Saam). The chair has an agreement on cooperation between the Chair of Baltic and Finnish Philology and Culture and Tallinn Pedagogical University.

Jointly with the Chair of Karelian and Veps languages of Karelian State Pedagogical Institute the chair prepares educational supplies for the courses of Karelian and Veps languages.

Jointly with Petrozavodsk state Conservatory the chair holds annual conferences on the problems of musical culture of the peoples of Karelia.

The instructors and post-graduate students of the chair work on probation at the chair of Baltic-Finnish languages of the University of Helsinki. (Zaikov P.M., 1994; Gorshkova O.E., 1993; Bogdanova E.V., 1996, Gorshkova O.E., 2000)

 

Scientific research work on the projects

The instructors of the chair work on the following projects:

1. The project "Finnish-Ugric world in Internet" includes preparing and locating on the server of PetrSU the articles on material and spiritual culture of Finnish-Ugric peoples of Karelia. (under supervision of P.M.Zaikov) (1998-2000)

2. The project "Theoretical aspects of Karelian grammar" implies writing two theoretical monographs: "Nominal forms of verbs in Karelian language" (P.M.Zaikov) и "Reflexive conjugation in Karelian language" (E.V.Bogdanova). (1998-1999)

3. The project "Problems of ethnocultural renaissance of small peoples in the European North" is aimed on studying Karelian and Veps languages. (under supervision of T.I.Starshova)

4. The project "Publishing educational supplies on Veps and Karelian grammar" is aimed to prepare for publication the following educational supplies "Verb in Veps language" (N.G.Zaitseva) and "A collection of exercises in Karelian language. The Verb" (Zaikov P.M., Gorshkova O.E., Rugoeva L.I.) (under supervision of P.M.Zaikov) (1998-1999) Книга опубликована в 2000 году.

5. The project "Languages of small peoples of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Karelia" (under supervision of H.Mantila, H.Sulkala) (1999- up to today) The four work meetings have been held and two collections of articles have been published.
