The Faculty of Philology of PetrSU has become famous in Russia and abroad for the research in the sphere of linguistic study of folklore, ethnolinguistics, Russian dialectology, historical poetics, comparativistics, studying of antique and Christian traditions in Russian literature, creative work of Pushkin and Dostoevsky, comparative analysis of folklore and science fiction, and children's literature.
Five departments of the faculty - Chair of Russian language, Chair of Russian literature and journalism, Chair of classic philology, Chair of Germanic philology, Chair of Scandinavian languages - train experts in Russian and literature, classical and modern Greek languages, English, German, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish languages. In recent years there have been established modern specializations - philological maintenance of journalism (mass-media) and new information technologies in philology.
Within the framework of international cooperation teachers participate in foreign conferences, implementation of joint projects, perform lectures in foreign universities, an also experts from Sweden, Norway, and USA are invited to teach students in PetrSU. In turn, students from the Great Britain, China, Sweden, Finland, USA, and Japan study Russian at the Faculty of Philology of PetrSU. Annual international and All-Russia conferences at participation of scientists from many countries of the world are held on the basis of the faculty.
Modern information technologies are used actively in the academic process and scientific research. The faculty has its Internet-laboratory where professional databases are created. There have been published The Concordances of all Dostoevsky's works, there has been made the scientific description and publication of the Gospel with postil made by Dostoevsky, publication of electronic edition of Vladimir Dal's complete set of works is prepared.
