Petrozavodsk State University is represented by the teachers of the Department of Classical Philology, Russian Literature and Journalism Anna Skoropadskaya and Ekaterina Agapitova.

The first stage of the expedition, intended to last 4 years, has ended. The route passed through the Northern part of the legendary route from the Varangians to the Greeks. The expedition started in Stockholm, continued along the route the Eastern shore of Sweden – the Aland Islands and ended in Staraya Ladoga.

The Chairman of the International Pedagogical Club, Aleksandr Kondriakov explained what the goal of the expedition was: “We are not striving to confirm or overturn certain theories and myths. Most participants of the exhibition are not professional historians. We want to look at the Northern European territories from a perspective of teachers (many of us are Russian language teachers).”

According to Anna Skoropadskaya, the borders of the Russian world are broader than state borders: historical and geographical traces of Russian presence are widely spread. “For instance, we could compare two monuments to Rurik in the Swedish town of Norrtälje and in Staraya Ladoga. For me personally it was a pleasant surprise to see the cannons of our Alexandrovsky factory that are still in the Russian fortress Bomarsund in the Aland Islands, destroyed by the English army during the Crimea War,” said Anna Skoropadskaya.

The expedition will continue next year. It will start in Staraya Ladoga. It is planned to involve students as well.

The expedition is organized by non-governmental organization “International Pedagogical Club”.
