Creative Degrees at PetrSU
PetrSU pays particular attention to developing creative specialties. This year we have admitted the first group to the course “Design”, next year we plan to start a distance course “Decorative and Applied Arts and Folk Handicrafts”; the university has obtained a license for a course “Film and Multimedia Production”. Apart from that, there is the University School of Arts and Film school "Labcinema.space". Tatyana Voloshina, the Head of the Department of Technology, Fine Arts and Design and inspirational leader, told about the work in this area.
For several years one could not have got a qualification of a designer in Petrozavodsk. Today this sphere lacks specialists. Every week directors from advertising companies and printing studios call and ask: “Do you have any specialists? Can your students come and help create advertising products?” So it was decided to fill this gap and start a new course “Design”, specialty “Communicative Design”.
A designer is first and foremost an artist, and that is why we pay special attention to academic drawing and painting. We have added a creative dimension to the curriculum by including project activity: during their 4 years of studies students work on different projects, develop advertising products, engage in branding, animation, web-design and the like.
The teachers of the Department are honored artists, members of creative associations, Union of Russian Artists and Designers. We also invite working designers and directors of design companies. They are always eager to cooperate as working with students means finding new talented employees.
University School of Arts
We have created the University School of Arts to help future applicants pass the entrance exams. Its purpose is not to compete with other schools but to “help” them.
Another important goal of the school is to promote artistic creation. Adults enjoy coming here after a long working day so that they could sit at an easel and start creating. It is art that helps one get away from daily routine and become a true creator.
Film School "Labcinema.space" and a new program
Having opened a little door into the big world of art, we have decided to take the next step and obtained a license for a course “Film and Multimedia Production”.
In Karelia, there are several film studios and great specialists, while nature just waits to be filmed.
In order to evaluate our opportunities and potential interest for cinema, we have opened a pilot educational space – the "Labcinema.space" Film School.
The Film School is a creative environment for making visual art. At the School, students have an opportunity to study the rules for making a film, basic principles of movie direction and skills of cameraman, producer and video editor.
Today there are 25 people of all ages who study at the school. They are already taking their first lessons as the students make their first videos under the guidance of the experienced directors Aleksey Babenko and Ivan Kulnev.
There is no specialized studio at our university yet, that is why they work in a form of a quest and each time change their location. We plan to make a special creative space on the territory of our university where it would be possible to change anything anytime, create, get inspiration and make films.
The Film School is the first but a very important step towards building a new creative industry in Karelia. Obviously, there is a lot to be done, but the first and most important step has already been taken.
Decorative and Applied Arts and Folk Handicrafts
Another area of creative development is decorative and applied arts. Some Karelian craftsmen are already in their eighties and they have no successors, some crafts are not being passed down to the next generations.
We are starting a course “Decorative and Applied Arts and Folk Handicrafts” to support and revive Karelian traditions. Next year the applicants will have an opportunity to enroll in a distance course of this specialty. The curriculum has already been written and we plan to develop a comprehensive training program for master craftsmen.
We have excellent facilities: rooms for wood- and metalworking and a sewing studio. Our department cooperates with the guild of craftsmen; we have teachers of lacemaking, embroidery, doll-making, national costume, and other handicrafts.
On the basics of traditional handicrafts, we are planning to create exclusive products, revive and develop the idea of the national costume and introduce the elements of Karelian traditional house into modern interior.
