Almost every day the site of Petrozavodsk State University publishes news tagged "Sport and Tourism". The reason for this is the proactive attitude of the teachers and students of the Institute of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism (IPCST), their records and victories, their names, which are known across the globe!

IPCST: ready!

The Institute of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism has 628 intramural and extramural students. Among them are international students from China, Vietnam, Syria, and Turkmenistan.

Every year the sporting family of the Institute welcomes about 70 first-year students from different regions of Karelia, Moscow, Leningrad, Murmansk, Kaluga, Kaliningrad, Vologda and other regions.

Potential students can choose the Bachelor Degree programs: "Service", "Tourism", "Hospitality", "Pedagogical education" (profiles "Physical Culture" and "Life Safety and Physical Culture"), "Physical Culture for Persons with Disabilities (profiles "Teacher of Adaptive Physical Culture and Sports" and "Instructor of Adaptive Physical Culture"), as well as the Master Degree program "Developing in the Tourism Industry".

Now the Institute is preparing to accredit an updated program of "Technosphere Safety". It is not directly related to sports or tourism, but it allows obtaining a useful specialty related to labor protection, safety at work, work with regulations, etc. Future engineers and inspectors will have to pass the Unified State Examinations in Mathematics (profile level), the Russian language and Physics. Training provides a wide range of knowledge, yet more attention will be paid to technical disciplines. The first students will be admitted in 2018. 19 students (full-time) will be able to study on a budgetary basis and paid places are also provided.

Educational process: the harder the training, the easier the mission

The educational process of the Institute of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism is organized in such way that allows students to fulfill themselves in every area. Highly qualified teachers and coaches, among them masters of sports, candidates, and doctors of sciences, help students in this.

Training sessions of the Institute are held using the modern infrastructure: sports gyms, choreography and gymnastics gyms, outdoor sports grounds, swimming pools. Gyms are available in the dormitories of the university, including gyms for students with disabilities. In total PetrSU has 27 sports venues.

Almost all disciplines of the Institute have an important prefix - "Theory and Principles." It means that students not only learn the discipline, but they can teach it in the future. The tourism program prioritizes courses on developing a business plan, management, advertising, etc. This allows graduates to feel confident in the tourism business or to open their business.

Every year teachers and students of the Institute take part in international competitions and events such as cross-border cooperation projects within the European Union Karelia ENPI CBC and Karelia ENI CBC. For many years the Institute has been maintaining friendly relationships with universities of Finland and carrying out academic mobility of students.

Sections and student associations: sport to the masses!

There are more than twenty sports sections and student associations at the university. The most popular are mini-football, volleyball, basketball, swimming, sports tourism, various types of martial arts. Besides, there are teams established by students themselves, so now PetrSU has football freestyle (juggling ball) and cheerleading sections.

Such sections are available not only to the students of the Institute of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism, but also to the students of other institutes. One of the ways to engage in a favorite sport is elective physical education. This is a form of taking physical education classes, when students choose their own sport, which they will be engaged in, based on their desires, possibilities, and convenience of the schedule. Students can change the elective course every semester. After training and having achieved the results, students will be able to reach a higher level and become members of PetrSU team in this kind of sport.

Now among available elective physical education courses are volleyball, basketball, mini-football, swimming, sambo, athletics, strength training, weightlifting, fitness, table tennis and general physical training.

Student practice: from trainee to minister.

The education at the IPCST is practice-oriented. During one academic year, students undergo one or more educational practices and become acquainted with their future profession, learn about its specifics and practice knowledge and skills under real-life conditions.

They try themselves in the roles of teachers of Physical Culture and Basics of Life Safety, instructors, trainers, guides, administrators, receptionists, etc. Their practice takes place in the general and sports schools of the Republic, sports camps, the Sports Center, the Karelian cadet corps named after Alexander Nevsky, the Emergencies Ministry; in tourist companies, hotels and restaurants such as hotels "Onego Palace", "Onega Castle", "Karelia", "Prionezhsky"; hotels "Severnaya", "Maski", "Villa Aino", "Petrozavodsk", "Karjala Park"; the Information Tourist Center of the Republic of Karelia, Tourism Center for Children and Youth of the Republic of Karelia, etc.

Upon their graduation, the students of the Institute have unlimited employment opportunities in various areas at regional, federal and international levels in educational, sports and tourism organizations, social and cultural services organizations and have the opportunity to open their own business. In many cases, graduates find employment at the place of their practice, as they have proved themselves already.
