PetrSU Scientists Created a Unique Dictionary
The Scientific Library of PetrSU hosted the presentation of the “Syntactic Dictionary of Russian Poetry of the 18th Century” created by the Department of the Russian language of the Institute of Philology.
The dictionary offers information on different aspects of describing constructions used by Russian classical poets: Antiochus Kantemir, Vasily Trediakovsky, Mikhail Lomonosov, Alexander Sumarokov, Gavrila Derzhavin, Mikhail Heraskov, Ivan Dmitriev, Nikolay Karamzin.
The dictionary will be published in four volumes; the first volume has already come out. The book covers the resplendence and variety of syntactic structures of the poetic works by Antiochus Kantemir and Vasily Trediakovsky.
“For the first time sentences extracted from the poetic works are analyzed in complex, from the viewpoints of structure, semantics, functions, in the context of genre, metrics, and stanzaic forms. This allows readers to form a sufficiently clear picture of the grammatical processes in the Russian literary language in the times of Lomonosov and Karamzin, learn about the interaction between syntax, architectonics, and meter of a poem, define the idiosyncratic turn of phrase of a writer at the grammatical level,” noted the Head of the Department of the Russian Language, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Natalia Patroeva. She has developed the methods of presentation and description of syntactical material of Russian poetry. Natalia Patroeva is the head of the group working on the dictionary.
The research team includes the leading teachers of the Department, Candidates of Philological Sciences E.P. Guseva, A.M. Dundukova, I.N. Diachkova, A.A. Lebedev, E.A. Mukhina, A.V. Priobrazhensky, A.V. Rozhkova, O.V. Semenova, N.S. Fomina.
Natalia Patroeva told about the work on the dictionary and the methods used in its development. She highlighted that currently the Department of the Russian Language is working on the next tomes of the dictionary. “In 2017 the Russian Foundation for Basic Research supported the Department’s project “Syntactic Dictionary of Russian Poetry of the 19th Century”, which aims at presenting the syntax of Russian Romantic poetry in lexicographic form,” reported Natalia Patroeva.
The presentation also featured reports of Professor A.V. Pigin (the Karelian Research Center of the RAS), Professor of the Department of Classical Philology, Russian Literature and Journalism A.E. Kunilsky, Candidate of Philological Sciences N.V. Tishchenko, Head of the Laboratory of Linguistic Regional Studies and Language Ecology, Associate Professor L.P.
