Rights of Indigenous Peoples of Karelia Discussed at PetrSU
The United Nations representative on the rights of indigenous peoples Aleskey Tsykarev visited Petrozavodsk State University, the only Russian university that teachers the Karelian, Veps, and Finnish language at the same time.
The Institute of Philology hosted a meeting of the Vice-Rector for International Affairs Marina Gvozdeva and the Head of the Department of Baltic and Finnish Philology Tatiana Pashkova with the international expert in the rights of indigenous peoples Aleksey Tsykarev.
In the framework of the strategic project of Petrozavodsk State University “Finno-Ugric World” the participants of the meeting discussed cooperation with public organizations, the involvement of employers in the educational process of the Department and holding a series of seminars on the rights of indigenous peoples for the students. The UN representative noted the unique environment recreated by Petrozavodsk University at the Ethnohouse.
The cooperation promises to be particularly eventful, as 2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Languages.
