The philological training programs were among the first to open at Petrozavodsk University, throughout its history, the Flagship University of Karelia has been training first-class specialists in this area. The quality and modern education allowed teachers and students to achieve high results in scientific, professional and creative areas.
The Institute of Philology offers three areas of training: "Philology", "Pedagogical Education (Russian Language and Literature)" and "Journalism." Master's programs are realized within the framework of the direction "Philology".
Among the teachers, there are many graduates of the Faculty of Philology of PetrSU. All of them keep up to date while preserving the kernel of classical liberal arts education. We use modern teaching techniques alongside the traditional methods that build a robust base.
One of the brightest examples of involving the world-renowned professors in the educational process is the lectures of Vladimir Nikolaevich Zakharov, Doctor of Philology, Professor and the President of the International Dostoevsky Society. Thanks to the Institute's broad connections with educational institutions in different countries, our students have the opportunity to attend lectures and participate in seminars held by visiting professors.
Scientific work is an essential part of the educational process at the university. Students who are the most engaged in this area can fulfill themselves at various conferences. Engagement in research and academic performance can result in practical training in other universities (including foreign). Our students undergo language training in Sweden, Finland, Germany, and Greece.
Students receive scholarships from the President of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Karelia, the Government of the Russian Federation, the scholarship of the Oxford Russia Fund and the Vladimir Potanin Foundation.
The Institute has several drama studios. The students often perform in front of large audiences and go on tours. Philological education attracts creative people, so our students fulfill themselves in different spheres: they write poetry, compose music and make videos.
Philology can be applied in various and numerous spheres. Our graduates work as teachers, journalists, translators, researchers, editors, proofreaders, librarians, press-secretaries, assistant managers, public relations and international cooperation specialists etc.
