PetrSU is on the first place among all regional centers of Russia in facilitating graduates employment.

By the results of the 2018 National Universities Ranking of Interfax PetrSU takes the 2nd place among Flagship Universities in the general ranking, 6th place among the universities of the northwest, 36th among all universities of Russia. In Innovations category PetrSU is on the 2nd place among Flagship Universities, 5th among the universities of the northwest, 29th among all universities of Russia.

The Flagship University of Karelia in the second place among Russian Flagship Universities in the Green Metric World University Ranking.

PetrSU is in the top three most demanded Flagship Universities of Russia by Russian economics.

PetrSU takes the 29th place in the Webometrics Rankings of World Universities.

In the Science Index PetrSU electronic journal, Lifelong Education: the 21st Century took the 5th place among 209 journals in the category “Public Education. Pedagogy.”

International Cooperation

PetrSU has 102 foreign partners, 45 active international projects, including microprojects, projects in culture and business. Every year over 150 PetrSU students take part in academic mobility programs. The University is actively developing cooperation with Finland, Hungary, China.


In November 2017 PetrSU representatives visited Anhui Normal University (Wuhu, China) and Northeast Petroleum University (Daqing, China).

PetrSU signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Northeast Petroleum University and agreed on the implementation of the double degree program in Philology, joint publication of academic papers and cooperation in research.

In June 2018 PetrSU awarded diplomas to the students of Anhui Normal University, the first graduates of the double degree program. The program launched in 2015 integrates curricula of the two universities.

PetrSU hosted the delegation from Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (China). During the visit, the parties signed the Memorandum of Understanding and outlined areas for cooperation (student exchange, international schools etc.).


PetrSU signed two agreements of cooperation with the Russian Center of the University of Pecs.

The University has the Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Szeged that stipulates development of mutually beneficial curricula and courses; exchange of staff for teaching and research etc.

In December 2017 PetrSU hosted the representatives of Stipenduim Hungaricum Program. They met the administration of the University and discussed academic mobility, the Association of Finno-Ugric Universities, and presented PetrSU students the academic mobility program Stipendium Hungaricum.

The members of the SLOVO International Agency of PetrSU embarked on the first educational expedition to the University of Pecs. The representative of the Flagship University of Karelia held classes for schoolchildren at the Gymnasiums n.a. Deak and Mihaly Babits, as well as in the University of Pecs. During the meetings, they told the young people about the Russian language, culture, and traditions of our country.


In June the Rector of PetrSU Anatoly Voronin visited Finland as a member of the official delegation of the Republic of Karelia. During the visit, he took part in a series of meetings with representatives of Finnish companies and the business community.

PetrSU signed the Agreement on Cooperation with Karelian Wood Company. There is an agreement with the Finnish Sawmills Association to compile a list of wood harvesting and timber processing enterprises of Finland in cooperation with the Opti-soft Company of PetrSU.

The Raiso Company (fish feed producer) and PetrSU agreed to do joint research in the areas of fish farming and fish feed production.

Petrozavodsk State University signed the Agreement of Cooperation with Joensuu Regional Development Company JOSEK. The partners plan to implement joint projects under the ENI Program.

Cooperation with Industries of Karelia

An essential part of PetrSU activities is the cooperation with the industry.

In April PetrSU joined the Russian employer trade association the Russian Engineering Union. The Union facilitates the state youth policy in engineering education and training of qualified workers and engineers for machine-building industry.

At the premises of Petrozavodskmach branch of the AEM-technologies PetrSU opened the Welding Center. It is the first stage of establishing a research and education complex for training specialists and introducing new technologies to atomic power engineering.


The 2017/18 academic year was eventful. In 2017 PetrSU became the winner of the Federal level programs:

·         Flagship University Development Program

·         Best Practices of Flagship Universities

·         Universities as Innovative Centers (priority project of the Government of Russia)

·         Federal Target Program Research and Development for Science and Technology Complex of the Russian Federation for 2014-2020 (3 projects).

The University is the winner of the Russian Youth Projects Contest among educational institutions of higher education.

At the 6th Congress of Nanoindustry Enterprises, PetrSU course Nanostructured Coating for Nuclear Industry Products became one of the winners of the first contest among educational course developers.

At the Exporter of the Year, the Opti-Soft SME engaged in the development of IT products was announced the best exporter of Karelia.

At the expo High Technologies. Innovations. Investments. HI-TECH’2018 the developments of PetrSU scientists were awarded silver medals in the following nominations:

·         Best innovative project in the area of IT, management technology, educational technology – project “Cloud System ‘Editor. Online’ for electronic mass media”

·         Best innovative project and best research and technology development of Russian digital economy – “Customized Information Service of Mobile Medicine for Chronically Ill Patients”

·         Best innovative project in the area of new materials, technologies and chemical products – “Physics of Nanostructured Oxide Films and Coatings” of PetrSU

Besides that, PetrSU became the winner of the Russian contest “Best practices of consistent work of educational organizations of various levels on bolstering the position of the Russian language”.

The development “Educational Contest “Native Land – Native Word” won in the nomination “The best development among organizations of professional education”. PetrSU was included in the Module of network cooperation of organizations engaged in conscious and consistent work on bolstering the positions of the Russian language.

At the Republic’s contest “The Book of the Year 2017” the title of the Book of the Year of the Republic of Karelia and the Grand Prix was awarded to the Publishing House of PetrSU for the book Herbarium of Petrozavodsk State University. The Publishing House also won in the nominations “Best Textbook” and “Best Art Work and Printing Quality” for the Herbarium of Petrozavodsk State University.


Education is the cornerstone of the University. Here are the highlights of academic life at PetrSU.

International research and practice conference The Alluring North: Language, Literature and Society convened over 260 philologists, historians, anthropologists, ethnographers, cultural scholars, philosophers, social experts, political scientists and economists from Russia, Belarus, Finland, and Sweden. Scientific community discussed the historical and cultural background and the conditions for the formation of the civilization of the North as well as the specifics of its current stage of development.

The regional forum of German language teachers of the Northwest of Russia convened around 100 participants – teachers, specialists, and students – from various educational institutions of Karelia, Novgorod, Gatchina, and Saint Petersburg.

At the International Social Work School, the teachers and students of PetrSU and Saimaa University of Applied Sciences discussed the issues of the social well-being of the people in Karelia and Finland.

PetrSU hosted the 70th All-Russian (with international participation) research conference of students and young scientists. The event is held at PetrSU since 1948 and every year convenes over a thousand participants from Petrozavodsk State University, other educational institutions of Karelia and Russia, as well as foreign partner universities of PetrSU. Among the participants are young scientists, students, postgraduates, interns, and schoolchildren.

In the framework of the 17th International Winter Programming Camp has once again hosted the contest for the Head of the Republic of Karelia Cup. 55 teams from 32 universities, 25 cities, 12 countries competed for the Cup.

PetrSU opened the Hall of Sambo and Fitness Technologies. The hall can host sambo, judo classes, various types of fitness exercises and artistic gymnastics. It is fit for individual and group classes, as well as municipal and Republic competitions.

Development of Urban and Regional Environment

The Flagship University established 5 Interregional Resource Centers in Petrozavodsk, Segezha, Sortavala, Kem, and Kostomuksha. The aim of the centers is to promote interaction with various target groups in Petrozavodsk and the regions of the Republic.

In March PetrSU opened the Orienting Point Travellers School. The school prepares for the Ready for Labor and Defense tourist skills program, holds practical classes, training, and tourist treks (rafting, trekking, mountaineering, cycling).

The co-working center the Boiling Point of PetrSU opened the first social project accelerator DevelopU. It is aimed at engaging the youth in the development of Karelian region.

The University hosted the open competition in educational and sports robotics RoboSkills PTZ 2017 and RoboSkills RK 2018. The competition fosters engineering creativity among children and adults.

The TechnoRoboCom 2018 convened 28 teams that presented their robots at three venues: Robot Battle, RoboFIFA Open Cup, and the qualification for the Russian Robotics Olympiad in Innopolis (Republic of Tatarstan).

The Center for Youth Innovative Creativity of PetrSU hosted the Russian contest of youth project RoboPolytech. Over 70 teams and 90 individual participants from all over Russia took part in the contest.

For the first time, PetrSU became of the regional venues of the Russian contest among amateurs in computer security QCTF Starter 2018. This year the competition was held at 33 venues in various cities of Russia and the CIS countries. PetrSU hosted 13 teams of PetrSU students and schoolchildren. The participants solved tasks from various areas of computer technologies and computer security.

The University opened the Museum of Tourism History of Karelia. It is the only museum of the Republic that covers the development of tourism in the region. The exhibition tells about the history from the ancient times to the first decade of the 21st century.

In the framework of the Ethnocultural Baltic and Finnish Mosaic PetrSU opened the Ethnohouse, a wooden house made by the employees and students of PetrSU with the support of the Karjalan Sivitysseura society. The house will host classes in national languages, lectures, and seminars dedicated to folk topics.
