The aim of the Festival is to discuss the works of Leo Tolstoy and his prominence in the modern day and age, development of humanities through uniting representatives of various humanitarian areas, science, and society, Russian and foreign young researchers.
Petrozavodsk State University, the Flagship University of the Republic of Karelia, was represented by the Associate Professor of the Department of World History, Political Studies and International Relations, Candidate of Political Sciences, Director of the Media Center of PetrSU Mikhail Bezborodov.
Within the academic program of the Festival, Mikhail Bezborodov presented his report “Leo Tolstoy and Orthodox Christianity: religion and faith”, in which he covered the fraught relations of the celebrated writer and the Russian Orthodox Church, Tolstoy’s conflict with the church and Orthodox Christianity. It is impossible to fully answer the question of why Leo Tolstoy has severed relations with the church and became disillusioned with Orthodox Christianity. We can consider different reasons but that would be only suggestions. The end of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th centuries is a very turbulent historical period in terms of politics, economics, culture, and religion. Leo Tolstoy’s life and works embody all the complexity and ambiguousness of the epoch,” believes Mikhail Bezborodov.
Mikhail’s report stirred great interest among the participants of the Festival. The question and answer session featured the complicated issues of evaluation of the legacy of the writer by the contemporary church officials and the official stance of the Russian Orthodox Church towards the works of Tolstoy today, interpretation of the Edict of the Most Holy Synod on Count Leo Tolstoy (1901).
