Every year, students from different parts of the world choose Petrozavodsk State University as a place to study the Russian language.

In this semester, students from European and Asian countries have studied at the Institute of Philology, the leading unit of the university providing training in the Russian language.

The educational process included not only complete immersion in the language environment and lectures and practical classes but also an acquaintance with Russian culture. Opportunities for intercultural communication in an informal setting and participation in events held by the teachers and students of the Institute of Philology allowed foreign students not only to broaden their horizons but also to improve communication skills. One of these events took place in December of the expiring year.

Students from Italy and France, who have been studying at Petrozavodsk State University during the autumn semester, became guests of the Museum of History of PetrSU and the ethnographic exhibition. Acquaintance with the history of the university and the exhibits of the Museum became possible thanks to not only an interesting excursion conducted by Anna Dzhaparidze, but also the second-year students of the Institute of Philology (their field of study is „Modern Greek language and literature, and English“), who acted as interpreters for the first time. Here is how future philologists comment on a new experience for them:

Yana Yushina:

For me, it was a very interesting experience because not every day you are given the opportunity to act as an interpreter, especially for foreign students for whom English, as for me, is not the native language. Most of all I liked to see that the audience for which I interpret understands me. It was pleasant to see the interest of the students since it is important for them to know about the history of the university at which they are currently studying. I think that such an event was undoubtedly a useful language practice.

Nikita Mavrichev:

Acting as an interpreter for the first time was quite difficult and exciting. The impression of the event and of my role in it is positive. It was a useful experience of using a foreign language with the main goal: to establish communication with foreigners.

At the end of the excursion, the foreign guests not only thanked Anna Dzhaparidze for the exciting field trip but also highly appreciated the interpretation of their Petrozavodsk colleagues.
