2019 has been proclaimed the “International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements” by the United Nations General Assembly. This large-scale event is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Periodic Law of Chemical Elements by the great Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev.

The initiative of observing the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements was put forward by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Russian and foreign scientists.

The Russian initiative was supported by foreign countries, international scientific organizations, as well as over eighty national academies of sciences and scientific societies. Among them are the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), European Chemical Society (EuChemS), International Astronomical Union (IAU) and others.

The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements will be held under the aegis of UNESCO in several countries around the world. In the context of the event, many activities are planned: scientific conferences, thematic exhibitions, contests for young researchers and so on.

On December 29, 2018, Dmitri Medvedev, the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, signed an order “On the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in 2019” and has led the Organizing Committee. The Organizing Committee consists of the heads of federal executive authorities, agencies and leading scientific organizations.

The inaugural ceremony of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements was held on January 29, 2019, in Paris, France, at UNESCO headquarters.
