The Academic Choir
The Academic Choir is the trademark of Petrozavodsk State University. It was founded in 1962 by the Honored Cultural Worker of Russia, the Honorary Citizen of Petrozavodsk, Professor Georgii Teratsuiants as an amateur choir and since then it has become an integral part of the social and cultural life of the university and the Republic.
In over 50 years of the Choir’s existence, more than 1700 people have been the singers of the Choir.
The repertoire of the Choir includes 1243 songs.
Currently, the Choir has 120 members.
Annually the Choir gives 30 performances.
2000 people took part in the combined choir conducted by the Choir’s artistic director Nikolai Matashin during the performance dedicated to the 95-year anniversary of the Republic of Karelia.
Projects
- International Festival of Choral Music dedicated to Georgii Teratsuiants – the Festival is held biennially and brings together choirs from Russia, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Poland, and Sweden.
- Annual final concerts of the seasons are held in the assembly hall of the university always to a full house.
- World Choir Games – the Olympics of choirs.
- Republic-wide and city event and festivities – the Academic Choir is a welcome guest at all mass cultural events.
Achievements
2014 – The gold and the bronze medals of the 8th World Choir Games in Latvia
2013 – the Grand Prix and the Audience Choice Award at the international festival in Malgrat de Mar, Spain
2012 – The prizewinner of the 14th Young Voices-2012 Festival of Student Choirs in Nizhny Novgorod
2010 – The prizewinner of the 5th All-Russian Spring at LETI Choir Competition, Saint-Petersburg
2010 – The prizewinner of the International Choir Festival in Thessaloniki, Greece
2009 – The prizewinner of the All-Russian Young Classics Choir Festival, Vologda
2007 – The prizewinner of the 12th International Choir Festival, France
2002 – The first place in the Combined Academic Choirs category at the 5th All-Russian Singing Russia – 2002 Amateur Choir Competition, Moscow
2000 – The prizewinner of the 1st Gaudeamus-2000 University Choir Festival, Izhevsk
2000 – The silver medal at the 1st World Choir Olympics, Austria
