Institute of Forestry, Mining and Construction Sciences

The Institute offers educational programs in the area of the mining industry, which has always been of huge importance in the region. It trains high-class specialists, who are able to use the achievements of modern science and implement them in order to develop mining complexes and thus improve the quality of life in Petrozavodsk and Karelia. Professors are always looking for innovative methods and technologies, which they can then use in the learning process.

Moreover, the Institute trains specialists in the areas of Construction, Technological Machines and Equipment, Landscape Architecture and Forestry, which are vital for the Republic of Karelia. It is the only educational institution in the region that provides higher education in the above-mentioned areas.

During their studies, students learn the fundamentals of various engineering systems, factory management, equipment operation, and other disciplines. Skills that they gain during theoretical and practical training allow them to become high-qualified specialists and work in various companies in Karelia and other regions of Russia.

One of the Institute’s key priorities is developing cooperation with the Institute of Geology in the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as with various geological survey organizations and mining companies for joint creation and development of fundamental  and applied scientific research, innovation technologies, and implementing the results of such research into practice in order to contribute to intellectual, social, economic and cultural development of the region. In the framework of international cooperation, the students attend lectures read by professors and scientists from the Nordic and Baltic countries. In this way, the students learn the international practices, foreign technologies, machines, and equipment.

At the research and university laboratories fitted with the cutting-edge equipment, the students consolidate the knowledge they learned and use it in practice. At the training facility in Shuya village, the engineering students learn the construction of tractors and cars, master the intricacies of their service and maintenance, can pass the exam and receive a license for driving a tractor. At the Landscape Design Studio, the students develop design projects for Petrozavodsk and Karelia. At the Student Design Bureau, the students work on engineering projects in the agricultural machinery industry, fish farming, and reverse engineering.

Practical training and internships are hosted by the leading enterprises of Karelia, the Vologda, Leningrad and Murmansk Regions, at transport and construction companies, woodworking integrated plants, pulp-and-paper plants, mining enterprises, forestry departments.

Upon graduation, the students pursue careers in various fields. The graduates are also skilled to open own businesses engaged in the innovational areas of mining, transport, wood processing, and other industries.
