This year's dictation was dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the birth of Karelian poet Vladimir Brendoev. The text for the dictation was based on his works.

Participants ranged in age from young people to older generations who cherish the memory of rare languages. Tatyana Tishkova, Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Karelia, also participated.

Tatyana Tishkova, Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Karelia:

“A language will never become obsolete, let alone dead, if we speak it, read it, watch films, and communicate with each other. This will prevent this from happening. It is precisely these kinds of events that popularize our native languages.

Elena Migunova, Head of the Department of State Support for Indigenous Peoples and Interaction with Public Associations, Ministry of National and Regional Policy of the Republic of Karelia:

“We have an annual event, always interregional. The Republic of Karelia, as well as the Vologda, Leningrad, and Tver regions, where Karelians and Vepsians live, are participating.

The dictation took place on Karelian and Vepsian Written Language Day. It was on April 20, 1989, that the alphabets of these languages and a set of basic spelling rules were approved. The acquisition of a written language allowed the Karelians and Vepsians to make their distinctive culture public.

Besides Karelia, the dictation was also held in neighboring regions.
