A New Chapter of the Legal Clinic of PetrSU
PetrSU as the Flagship University makes considerable efforts to resolve social problems in the region and provides legal education and free legal assistance to the people. The Legal Clinic of PetrSU is central to the work done in this area. At the Clinic, law students learn to render competent legal assistance under the guidance of experienced practicing teachers.
The Legal Clinic received a boost after the visit of the Head of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives Svetlana Chupsheva and the President of Russia Vladimir Putin in the summer of 2017.
The President thanked PetrSU Clinic for the important contribution to the social support of the people and wished further success.
Having been endorsed at the highest level, the Legal Clinic opened a new chapter: an additional office was opened at the Institute of Economics and Law on ul. Lomonosova. Senior students and Master Degree students have started visiting the regions of Karelia to provide free legal assistance to the people, the first-year students are keen to take part in the “legal education of the people” and go to schools with presentations.
The keystones of the Legal Clinic of PetrSU have been and still are accessibility, quality, and social orientation. These underlying principles are enforced by the experienced teachers who have an extensive experience in legal consulting, document execution, representation in court.
The principal area of activities of the Legal Clinic of PetrSU is legal consulting of citizens and creation of legal documents. These services are available not only to the citizens of Petrozavodsk but to all residents of the regions of Karelia.
In cooperation with the Ministry of Social Protection, Labor and Employment of the Republic of Karelia, this autumn PetrSU organized field consultation centers in the remote rural settlements in the Prionezhsky region of the Republic of Karelia. On October 25, consultation centers worked in Shoksha and Sheltozero Veps villages.
On November 22, consulting centers were open in Ladva and Ladva-Vetki villages. It is very convenient for the residents of the regions.
The heads of the regions inform the people of the upcoming events as they understand what a unique opportunity it is to receive professional and free legal assistance.
The Legal Clinic takes part in career orientation events in the regions of Karelia “Way to Profession – 2017” in cooperation with the Career Orientation Department of PetrSU.
It should be noted that the students are determined to improve their professional skills by taking part in the Schools of Professional Skills held at the premises of the Center of Development of Legal Clinics (Moscow). On November 7 the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees announced the results of the contest for free participation in the Clinicians School 2017.
Altogether 107 applications were submitted for the contest. Among the prize-winners are four students of the Institute of Economics and Law of Petrozavodsk State University! This year the School focuses on the practical skills of a lawyer using cases of legal protection of persons without citizenships in the Russian Federation: case analysis, developing a case theory and consulting.
“Violation of rights and legitimate interests of citizens are attributed to the low level of legal culture among the citizens who do not know their rights and freedoms and cannot protect them. One way to solve this problem is legal education and forming legal culture beginning in school,” believes Svetlana Gabucheva, the Director of the Legal Clinic, a senior teacher of the Department of Civil Law and Process.
November 20 is the All-Russian Day of Legal Assistance to Children established by the decision of the Government Commission for implementation of the Federal Law of 21.11.2011 No. 324-ФЗ “On free legal assistance in the Russian Federation”. On this day the students of the Institute of Economics and Law held classes in law at the educational institutions of Petrozavodsk.
Thus, the first-year students Ekaterina Danchuk and Elizaveta Zelenova visited the School No.27 and held an event on the protection of children’s rights. The students shared with the 6th-grade pupils their knowledge of a child’s rights and issues of their protection in the Russian Federation. “It was great to see enthusiastic children. The class turned into interactive event as the children asked a lot of questions about the problems that concerned them,” said the girls.
