Toive Ensemble at ELONPU Festival
On July 13 PetrSU Toive folk music ensemble performed at the traditional holiday of Veps culture “Tree of Life” on the banks of the Onega Lake in the old village of Sheltozero.
The Festival ELONPU, “Tree of Life”, is aimed at the preservation of folk traditions and the language of the Veps, the indigenous small people of the Republic of Karelia. Since 1987 the holiday is held annually. This year the festival was dedicated to the resurrection of the Veps writing.
“Toive ensemble visited Sheltozero for the first time and performed its favourite program: traditional songs and dances of the indigenous peoples of Karelia. Creative groups had a hard time this day as everyone performed in heavy rain. Although, when it was time for Toive to perform the clouds gave way to the gentle Karelian sun. When the ensemble performed the last Zaonezhje song the rain started again and turned into a downpour. It was a blessing of a kind. On Sunday, July 21, Toive embarks on creative practice to Vodlozero National Park under the wing of Father Oleg and Mother Natalia,” said Alevtina Voitovich, teacher of folk musical instruments.
The organizers of the project are the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Karelia, Center of National Cultures and Folk Art of the Republic of Karelia, Youth Informational and Legal Center of Indigenous Peoples “Nevond”, and the Administration of Sheltozero Veps village settlement. Among the partners were the Ministry of Karelia for Nationality Policy, Relations with Public and Religious Organizations and Mass Media, National Museum of the Republic of Karelia, Sheltozero Lonin Museum of Veps Ethnography, the Karelian Union of Veps Youth “Vepsan Vezad”.
