Railway Tourism in Karelia

08 November 2019
Can Karelia become a part of a train tour? What routes are there? What train tours include Karelia?

The 4th year students of the Institute of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism worked on projects of a train tour and looked for answers to these questions. Currently, tourists can take a tour on a retro train from Saint Petersburg to Sortavala and see the sights there. It is an attractive destination, yet it includes just several sights of the Republic. Students proposed a concept of a tourism product following the route Moscow – Petrozavodsk – Kondopoga – Medvezhya Gora – Segezha – Nadvoitsy – Belomorsk and a concept of a Polar Express departing from Saint Petersburg through Karelia to Murmansk in order to visit Ded Moroz who lives in the Russian North. Passengers of the trains could see the amazing sights of Karelia and facilitate economic development of the regions of the Republic by increasing the number of tourists.
