PetrSULaunches a New Master's Degree Program
Online education via Russian and international platforms is an important component of the world-class advanced educational program in the field of physics of functional nanomaterialsestablished at PetrSU.
Petrozavodsk State University has announced a recruitment for the new advanced educational Master’s degree program in "Physics of functional nanomaterials" (with speciality04.03.02 "Physics") for 2021.
The program, establishedjointly by the team of developers of the Faculty of Physics of St. Petersburg State University and teachers of the Institute of Physics and Technology of Petrozavodsk State University, complies with global educational trends on forming competences in digital economy by means of the advanced practices in scientist and engineer training in "Physics", including the use of resources of the Russian and international digital educational online platforms.
The program includes a number of special disciplines, implemented through designed online courses placed on the Russian and international educational online platforms. Designing the online courses demanded the corresponding teaching competencies of employees from the St. Petersburg State University and PetrSUproject team who develop the educational program, learning the organizational and teaching experience, the specifics online courses planning and creation. Ten representatives of PetrSU havecompletedadvanced training in "Interactive Teaching Methods in Modern Education System" at St. Petersburg State University.
An online educational course "Planar Manufacturing Technologies" has been introduced (authors - Prof. Alexander Baraban, Head of the Department of Solid State Electronics of St. Petersburg State University, IgorKlimov, Associate Professor of the Department of Solid State Physics of PetrSU) via online education platform "Open educational platform of PetrSU", which is integrated with the state information system "Modern digital educational environment". The course is mainly aimed at students' understanding of the basic physical principles of the key elements of microelectronics, including the substrate preparation processes, epitaxy and deposition, oxidation, diffusion, ion implantation, metallization. The course covers in detail the manufacturing technology of very-large-scale integrated circuit, assembly and sealing methods, control and diagnostics of the items received, presents a view on the prospects for the further development of micro- and nanoelectronics.
Igor Klimov, Associate Professor of the Department of Solid State Physics of PetrSU, emphasizes that the online educational course "Planar Manufacturing Technologies" is based on module principle:
“The course has been established in distance-learning system Moodle and is based on module principle - it consists of 14 training modules and a final examination / pass or fail test. Each module consists of lectures and tests. Lectures contain theoretical material, illustrations, 3D models of installations and processes and control questions on the topic of the lecture for the ongoing performance monitoring. Tests are designed for the control of the knowledge gained during the module. Access to the next part (module, lecture, test) is possible only if you receive a grade not lower than "satisfactory" in the previous part.”
Master’s degree program in "Physics of Functional Nanomaterials" also includes the export-oriented discipline "Fundamentals of Electron and Ion Microscopy" (authors - Prof. Oleg Vyvenko, Professor of the Department of Solid State Electronics of St. Petersburg State University, YuriPetrov, Associate Professor of the Department of Solid State Electronics of St. Petersburg State University). In order to implement the program, an open online course in English has been established on the Coursera international platform, thus, foreign students have an opportunity to take the online course.
TatianaEkimova, Associate Professor, Acting Head of the Department of Solid State Physics, PetrSU, assesses the significance of the online course for the preparation of Master’s degree students in "Physics of Functional Nanomaterials":
“During the online course, future graduates with Master degree will studythe physical foundations of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, scanning ion microscopy and focused ion beams, imaging processes in electron and ion microscopy, and methods of interpreting the images received. Besides, it has been planned to review the additional analytical methods’foundations used in electron microscopy, such as qualitative and quantitative X-ray microanalysis, electron diffraction, spectroscopy of characteristic electron energy losses, the foundations of using focused ion beams for the material modification and analysis.”
Digital resources of Russian and international educational platformsas a part of the educational programallow to train scientists and engineers who haveup-to-date competencies in the area of world scientific and technological trends of physical properties studies, characterization and use of relevant materials, as well as digital and linguistic competencies, fluent in physics, necessary to find scientific and innovative solutions, who can apply the research results in innovative activities.
