Madeline Alcuz, a Student of the Institute of Medicine, Won the Essay Contest
From December 1 2021 to April 8 2022, Voronezh State Medical University named after N. N. Burdenko conducted the 9th International Foreign Language Contest among medical and pharmaceutical universities "Medicine and languages: at the crossroads of cultures". The Contest had two stages.
55 students from the 1st and 2nd courses of General Medicine and Pharmacology (gr. № 71109, 71110, 71205, 71206, 71210, 71211, 71216, 71217, 73120, 73220) under the guidance of Olga Volodina, Associate Professor, took part in the 1st, remote stage of the essay contest on a medical topic.
The statement of Aldous Huxley, the English writer and philosopher, was proposed as the essay topic: "Medical science is making such remarkable progress that soon none of us will be well".
Both Russian and foreign students from Colombia, Yemen, Jordan and Mexico took part in the essay contest. Unfortunately, the organizing committee rejected the works of two Ghana students, since English is the official language in this country.
Creative task was evaluated according to the following criteria:
- a) content - the volume of the text (250 - 300 words), compliance with the topic, stylistics, vocabulary and grammar, the level of argumentation and the presentation of the fact material;
- b) the structure and composition of the text - the consistency of the statement, the use of means of logical connection, the adherence to the statement format and the division of the text into paragraphs;
- c) originality of the statement.
All contest texts were checked for plagiarism.
Madeline Alkuz (the 2nd year student of the Institute of Medicine of PetrSU from Jordan) became one of the winners of the essay competition and a finalist of the Contest.
In the finals during the 2nd stage in an online format, the participants presented oral messages - a monologue on a given topic ("When marketing goes into medicine, we may expect the norm to turn into pathology") and a spontaneous statement about a given picture.
As the result of the 9th International Foreign Languages Contest among medical and pharmaceutical universities "Medicine and Languages: at the Crossroads of Cultures" Madeline Alkuz won the second prize!
Congratulations to Madeline on an excellent result and the well-earned victory!
It should be noted that, according to the information in the Contest rating list, the students of PetrSU also showed good results. All participants will receive their certificates.
