30 January 2025
In January 2025, Nadezhda Shablikova, Associate Professor of the Department of the English Language, Sabina Nedbaylik, Associate Professor of the Department of the German and French Languages, Anna Zherebtsova, a third-year student of the Institute of Foreign Languages, and Evgeny Lebed, a Master's student of the Herzen State Pedagogical University, a 2024 graduate of the Institute of Foreign Languages of PetrSU, took part in the 6th Winter School of Translation at St. Petersburg State University.

The 6th Winter School of Translation was organized by the Union of Translators of Russia, the Association of Translation Teachers, as well as representatives of other universities and organizations.

The grand forum, which brought together more than 500 participants, was held in a mixed format and a wide thematic, multilingual spectrum.

The reports of plenary sessions and sections, round table discussions and master classes touched upon various aspects of the practice and teaching of oral and written translation, as well as applied linguistics, history, political science, diplomatic relations, African studies, etc. The audience had the opportunity to meet such outstanding professionals in the field of translation studies as P.R. Palazhchenko, D.I. Ermolovich, A.G. Falaleev.

Sabina Nedbaylik:

“I am very glad that I had the opportunity to participate in the Winter School of Translation, to get acquainted with new developments of specialists and researchers known in Russia and abroad, to immerse myself in the creative discussion atmosphere of the scientific forum, to receive interesting information. I think that all this will be very useful in my professional activities. A pleasant surprise for me was a meeting with the French-speaking Algerian writer Meriem Guemache, the author of several collections of short stories, essays, children's books published in different languages in France and other countries. I hope for a continuation of the creative dialogue!

Nadezhda Shablikova:

“This is the third time I have taken part in the work of the St. Petersburg School of Translation, I have the opportunity to get involved in an interesting topic, exchange professional experience. For me as a translation teacher and freelance translator, it is very important to learn about new techniques and methods of work, about the problems that practicing translators face and about possible ways and means of solving them. Thanks to the organizers for the wonderfully prepared event! I am looking forward to the opening of the summer school!

Anna Zherebtsova:

“Visiting the Winter School of Translation at St. Petersburg State University was a new and very useful experience for me. Most of all I remember the master class of Andrey Gerkurievich Falaleev, who spoke about the problem of so-called false friends of the translator, or pseudo-equivalents, and how to learn to recognize them in practice. It was also very useful to listen to the lecture of Dmitry Ivanovich Ermolovich on the meaning of service words in translation. In general, all the lectures and master classes were very informative, and each speaker tried to present new interesting material in their own individual style.
