A BarSU Student's Review of Her Exchange Program at PetrSU
“My name is Kristina, and I am a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Education and Psychology at Baranovichi State University. My academic adventure led me to the wonderful Petrozavodsk State University, where I completed an exchange program at the Institute of Education and Psychology during the fall 2025 semester.
The decision to participate in the exchange program was a conscious one. The desire to broaden my horizons, experience a new culture, and gain a unique academic experience was a powerful motivator.
The application and selection process was well-structured, and thanks to the timely support of both our university and my host, PetrSU, all stages went smoothly. I would especially like to highlight the flexibility of the exchange program: the ability to choose courses from a list of available subjects allowed me to create a curriculum that best suited my academic interests and the curriculum of my home university.
From the first days of my stay in Petrozavodsk, I felt surrounded by care. Exchange program coordinator Irina Sergeevna Myadel and the PetrSU international student association "Neighbors" provided invaluable assistance with my adaptation. All necessary documents were processed promptly and professionally by the staff of the Academic Mobility Department and the Registration and Visa Department. Everyday issues, such as dorm accommodation, public transportation, and obtaining a local SIM card, were resolved with the active support of volunteers, allowing me to fully focus on my studies and getting to know the city.
The classes at PetrSU were diverse: a combination of lectures, active seminars, project work, and independent work allowed me to deeply immerse myself in the topics being studied. My interactions with the professors, who were open and willing to engage in dialogue, as well as with my classmates, were very productive and facilitated knowledge exchange.
The exchange period was a time for me not only to study but also to deeply immerse myself in Russian culture. Interacting with local and other international students enriched my experience, allowing me to see the world from different perspectives, and the student groups and events at PetrSU offered numerous opportunities for self-fulfillment and leisure. I discovered a new side of Karelia's culture, traditions, and, of course, local cuisine.
To successfully prepare for the exchange program, I would advise students to follow these guidelines:
Carefully review the list of available courses and discuss the possibility of transferring them with your home university in advance.
Set aside an adequate budget, taking into account not only accommodation and food costs but also leisure activities, excursions, and possible unexpected expenses.
Being open and proactive in communicating with local students and volunteers is key to quickly adapting.
Avoid common mistakes, such as underestimating differences in the educational system and cultural norms.
This exchange experience was invaluable for me. I not only acquired new knowledge in the fields of pedagogy, psychology, and psychiatry, but also significantly improved my skills in intercultural communication, adaptation, and independence.
My study abroad experience had a profound impact on my professional and personal development, broadening my horizons and strengthening my self-confidence. My most vivid memories are connected with the genuine hospitality of the people, the beauty of the Karelian nature, and the atmosphere of student life at PetrSU. I would without hesitation recommend this program to any student seeking a unique and enriching experience.
The PetrSU Academic Mobility Department expresses its sincere gratitude to Kristina for such a detailed and honest review of the student exchange program. We wish Kristina continued courage and curiosity that brought her to study abroad—they will surely open doors to new and exciting horizons.
