Bone Marrow Donation
PetrSU hosted the opening of photo exhibition dedicated to bone marrow donation. It was organized by the volunteers of the donor movement of PetrSU. The student set themselves the important task of drawing the attention of students, teachers, and employees of the University to this topic, make it clear to everyone.
“National register of potential bone marrow donors in Russia has around 80 thousand people. Each year there are 40 thousand patients who need treatment. It is difficult to find a donor, as it requires a match in 14 genetic parameters,” told the leader of the movement Elena Kotacheva, the student of the Institute of Medicine of PetrSU.
The girl explained that Karelian register is different from others as it uses an innovative method of sampling. The genetic research of potential donor is done using saliva samples instead of blood. Thanks to this employees and volunteers of the register are not bound to any medical institution and can hold events anywhere.
Yury Ioffe, hematologist, head of the Charity Foundation “Karelian Register of Bone Marrow Donors” told about the contribution of PetrSU volunteers to the common cause: “The University and the donor movement of PetrSU are our partners in the organization of events at the University, in Petrozavodsk and beyond. They help us solve two major problems. The first is informing the people, holding events to enlarge the register. The second contribution is that the students and employees of the University themselves are candidates for bone marrow donation. Thanks to the work of the volunteers recently the register has added several hundred people”.
“Usually PetrSU exhibits works by painters and fine art creators. But to save someone’s life, give a part of yourself is an art too. Not everyone can do that. We all hope that after such exhibitions and events there will be more donors and consequently leukemia patients will have more chances for recovery,” said Vasily Katarov, the Vice-Rector for Social and Discipline Work of PetrSU.
The exhibition on bone marrow donation is open at the lobby on the second floor of the main building of PetrSU (pr. Lenina, 33). It consists of two parts. The exhibition itself presents photos taken at previous events. They show the activities of the register and selection of potential donors. The second part is an information section that presents the details of bone marrow donation.
