PetrSU Publishing House Issued “The History of Tourism of the Republic of Karelia”
The presentation of the book will be held in the National Library of the Republic of Karelia on the eve of World Tourism Day. The author of the book is the Professor of the Department of Tourism of the Institute of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism Tamara Glushanok.
While working on the book, the author drew on her many years of experience in tourism, extensive archival materials, and memories of veterans of tourism. This allowed systematizing knowledge about the origin and development of tourism in Karelia over a long historical period.
While turning the pages of the book, you can get acquainted with the initiatives of the first travelers (merchants, pilgrims, Pomor sailors, royals, scientists and researchers); the activities of the Travelling and Excursion Bureau of the Murmansk Railway and experienced local historians during the first Post-Revolutionary years; enthusiasts of grassroots walking tours for the people and the formation of professional tourist and excursion activities since the 60s of the 20th century and its current achievements. These materials are widely illustrated with exclusive photographs from the personal archives of the author and veterans of tourism.
The material presented in the historical retrospective provides an opportunity for better understanding of the events and trends of domestic tourism, contemplating the role of tourism in the development of culture, economy, education, science, the formation of a modern man and assessing the opportunities for further development of tourism in Karelia.
In the section "Personalities" the author introduces the biographies of specialists in the field of tourism, who have made a significant contribution to its development. A Short Guide for Guides and Tourists in Karelia, which is very rare, was written by an outstanding local historian of Karelia Stepan Makaryev in 1931 and included in the book so that these materials could be used while developing new interesting tourist routes in our region.
The book is the first attempt to present the history of tourism in Karelia and is intended for non-specialist audiences. In addition, the book expands the information of the Museum of the History of Tourism in Karelia that was opened at the Institute of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism of PetrSU.
The presentation will be held on September 26 at 17.00 at the National Library of the Republic of Karelia.
