Professor Poltorak on Contemporary Trends in Biomedical Science
The Sirius Educational Center (Sochi) launched research and technology project program “Big Challenges”.
This program is designed for winners and prize-winners of Russian contest of projects and research works among schoolchildren. Within the program, the participants will gain the experience of applying subject knowledge and practical skills to professional activities, adapted for the form of projects on the premises of the Sirius education center.
The program “Big Challenges” includes 12 prospective areas. One of them, “Genetics, personalized and prognostic medicine”, features the Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics of Innate Immunity of the Institute of High Biomedical Technologies of PetrSU, Professor of Tufts University (Boston, USA) Aleksandr Poltorak.
Professor Poltorak tells talented schoolchildren (participants of the project) about trends in biomedical sciences, possibilities of studying the effect of bacterial lipopolysaccharide structure on its biological activity, and consequences of macrophages activation by ligands of receptors of innate immunity, including those present in some medications, using mouse models in these research areas.
Such research can facilitate the progress of biomedical technologies in the therapy of sepsis and septic shock, tumor and autoimmune pathologies.
