The «Arctic Sessions»: an expert discussion on security issues in the Arctic Region
No more than 10 years ago, during a period of intensification of international cooperation in the Arctic, Russia’s military presence in the region was seen by the Western partners not as a potential threat but rather as a contribution to finding a joint solution for common security issues. However, the recently intensified confrontation between Russia and the West has changed the situation in the North by increasing the regional conflict potential.
In the meantime, the security issues that have been and still are typical for the region include the issues of adjusting to the climate changes and growing economic development, ensuring security of navigation, as well as dealing with accumulated ecological damage.
Ways to address and deal with both «hard» and «soft» security issues in the Arctic will be considered by the participants of a roundtable discussion on the topic “Arctic Security in the Current Situation”.
This will be the forth discussion in a series called the «Arctic Sessions» – a project that acquired grant support from the Gorchakov Fund. The event is organized by the Centre for International Journalism Development “RBMC” in collaboration with the Project Office for Arctic Development (PORA).
