PetrSU Students Participate in the Arctic Internship Program

15 October 2025
Students from the Institute of Physics and Technology, the Institute of Economics and Law, and the Institute of Forestry, Mining, and Construction Sciences, accompanied by Niyole Stanislavovna Skorikova, Associate Professor of the Department of Enterprise Energy Supply and Energy Saving, participated in a three-day Arctic internship program.

The event, organized by the PetrSU Career Center as part of the "Okay, Karelia" project, allowed the students to immerse themselves in the industrial and social environment of Segezha.

On the first day, the students visited the Ondskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant, a tour of which proved to be highly informative. After a safety briefing by Tatyana Lyapunova, the group toured the plant. Andrey Telbukhov, the plant's Chief Engineer, led the students through all the key facilities: from the enormous hydraulic structures to the heart of the plant—the turbine hall—where he demonstrated and explained the operation of each unit. The tour concluded at the 110 kV and 220 kV outdoor switchgears, where the generated electricity is transmitted. The tour included a detailed explanation of the plant, from the hydroelectric power plant's organizational structure to the latest equipment upgrades.

The second day was entirely devoted to the Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill (PPM). The visit was organized by Maria Shkut, Leading Specialist in Social Affairs and Internal Communications, and Ksenia Osipova, Youth Policy Specialist.

The visit began with an occupational health and safety briefing by Daria Rogazinskaya and Yulia Shirskaya, occupational health and safety specialists.

The students also enjoyed a comprehensive tour of the mill's key facilities:

CHP-1: a tour of the plant's "power heart" was led by Svetlana Bogdanovna Krasilnikova, Head of the Department;

Papermaking Machine No. 11 (PM-11): Shift supervisors demonstrated the operation of the mill's main production giant to students.

Training Center: Elena Dmitrievna Svistunova, the center's Director, presented the personnel training and development system.

A special highlight was the business simulation held at the Cosmos Segezha Hotel, prepared and conducted by Olga Mityakova, Marina Makarova, and Anna Gurskaya, specialists from the Recruitment and Onboarding Department, for future tourism professionals.

A significant event on the final day was a technical tour of the Segezha Hotel Complex's infrastructure, with special attention paid to the building's recently modernized heating system. This experience allowed students to appreciate the practical aspects of energy supply for social facilities. Students also had the opportunity to learn about the operations of Secondary School No. 7 and the Northern College. During the visit, the students not only observed the organization of the educational process but also held career guidance meetings, sharing their experiences of studying at PetrSU with schoolchildren and college students.

The students shared their impressions of the trip.

“The internship was very informative and meaningful. At the Ondskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant, we were fortunate to see a hydroturbine disassembled for major repairs and also had the opportunity to delve into the very depths of the plant. The tour of the city itself was quite interesting. The pulp and paper mill was a great experience. We were shown CHPP-1, which ensures the plant's energy efficiency, and the highlight of the visit was PM-11. I couldn't take my eyes off the paper packaging process. Everything was just like in children's cartoons: mechanical arms, conveyors, and so on. Overall, the trip left extremely positive impressions and memories.

“This trip will remain in my memory for a long time. I finally got the chance to see what was discussed in the lectures firsthand and immerse myself in the world of technology. I really enjoyed the warm welcome provided by the Pulp and Paper Mill staff. Besides gaining new knowledge, this trip gave me the opportunity to meet new people who motivate me to never give up and always move forward. I'd also like to thank our guides! I sincerely hope this isn't our last meeting with them, but rather just the beginning.
