Modern Aquaculture Technologies and Fish Health Protection

16 October 2025
As part of the scientific and practical seminar "Modern Aquaculture Technologies and Fish Health Protection," the Department of Animal Science, Fish Farming, Agronomy, and Land Management held events dedicated to current issues related to the epizootic situation in trout farming in the Republic of Karelia.

Trout health protection, disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment are pressing issues and require aquaculture specialists to possess professional competencies and knowledge in this area. Therefore, when training future fish farming specialists, it is important to study the experience of various fields of fisheries science, and especially modern and relevant methods for diagnosing and treating viral diseases of salmonids.

The events were organized by the Karelian Trout Farmers Association and the Karelian Institute for Retraining and Advanced Training of Personnel in the Agro-Industrial Complex (AIC).

Vladimir Petrovich Melnikov, Head of the Reference Laboratory for Aquaculture Diseases at the Federal Center for Animal Health, delivered a lecture on the main viral diseases of salmonids. Master's and undergraduate students majoring in Aquatic Bioresources and Aquaculture, as well as staff from the Research Center for Aquaculture at PetrSU, listened to materials on the main viral diseases of fish, focusing on viruses that affect salmonids and cause significant damage to rainbow trout and salmon aquaculture. Melnikov also discussed the activities of his laboratory and its main research areas in fish diseases.

The students reinforced the theoretical topics covered during the seminar during a four-hour practical session on obtaining fish tissue samples in the PetrSU laboratory. Samples obtained from four batches of trout will be subsequently tested for various pathogens, including the most dangerous viral diseases of trout, in a specialized laboratory at the All-Russian Research Institute of Animal Health.

The Department of Animal Science, Fish Farming, Agronomy, and Land Management, the fish farming students, and the staff of the PetrSU Aquaculture Research Center express their gratitude to the seminar organizers, Vladimir Petrovich Melnikov and Alla Vasilyevna Pereverzeva, for the interesting and relevant sessions, as well as for the practical experience gained.
