The Flagship University of the Republic of Karelia hosted travelers from Norway. Erling Vaag and Stein-Fr Kynø are kayakers. Both are amateur sportsmen: Erling is a geologist, and Stein is an engineer.

They started from Oslo at the beginning of March. Their goal is to visit five countries in seven months and cover over 7000 km on kayaks. In Russia, the Norwegians have already sailed across the Gulf of Finland, made a stop in Saint Petersburg and proceeded to the Ladoga and Onega lakes.

In PetrSU Erling and Stein visited the ethnographic exposition of the Museum of History of PetrSU and learned about the Sampo tourist club.

“We met Anna Dzhaparidze, the Head of the Sampo tourist club, last year when we were planning the expedition and the route across Karelia. I have found the information about the club and contacted Anna. I came to Karelia and we met in person. We are amazed by the level of competence of the tourist club and the complexity of the treks they do,” said Erling.

The guests managed not only learn about the culture and lifestyle of the denizens of Karelia but also discussed prospects for cooperation and implementation of a joint project in the area of tourism.

The travelers proceeded to the Kizhi Island, then via the White Sea Canal to Arkhangelsk. The route also includes passage across the White Sea following the traditional route of the Pomors, which unites Russia and northern Norway.

You can learn more about the daring travelers, see photos and video of the expedition of Erling and Stein on the website.
