PetrSU Students Engaged in Landscape Research of Karelia
The students are on a field trip to study the landscapes of Paanajarvi National Park: lakeshore geo complexes of relatively unknown in Karelia waterfalls Kivakkakoski and Mantykoski, the estuary of the Mantyjoki River etc.
The 2nd, 3rd, and 5th year students of the Department of Earth Sciences and Geotechnologies have been undertaking practical training for a month and have carried out a geographical study of the territory of Karelia.
The students embarked on an expedition to study the landscapes of Paanajarvi National Park, the federal territory of special protection in the north-west of Karelia. In situ, the students monitored the condition and dynamics of the landscapes.
The group also monitored and studied the Kivakkakoski waterfall on the Olanga River. The students studied the lakeshore geo complexes, paleoseismic dislocations, creek valleys, described flora of birch and small-leaved fir forests, human intervention (water millstones, duck houses, paths, dam).
The students explored the lakeshore landscapes of Paanajarvi Lake, the estuaries of the Olanga and Mantyjoki rivers, five-level Mantykoski Waterfall, Ruskeakallio rocks on the northern shore of the lake.
The group also did a geographical description of the Tunturi Kivakka tourist path: analyzed altitudinal zonation, described mountain taiga belt, forest tundra crooked trees, performed panoramic orientation and assessed recreational resources. Within the practical training, the young geographers studied the paths to the geo complexes of asar valleys (quaternary deposits, soils, biocenoses, human impact), described tourist camps Mermaid, Pearl, Komarovo, Borovichok, and Deer Forest.
At the end of the training, the students presented their geographical research at the final conference.
