This year its topic is “Travel and study: creating the future with Alexander von Humboldt / Reisen und Forschen: Mit Alexander von Humboldt die Zukunft mitgestalten".

The idea of the marathon is to use the German language as a tool to gain and present scientific knowledge. The events of the marathon are aimed at the promotion of the history of scientific and geographical discoveries made by German and Russian researchers and the encouragement of studying the German language and culture.

The Institute of Foreign Languages if PetrSU joined the marathon and from October 21 till November 21 will host a series of events. One of them is a poster exhibition “Germany – the Land of Inventors / “Erfinderland Deutschland”.

The exhibition has seven topical sections: “Communication”, “Computer Science”, “Optics”, “Energy”, “Medicine”, “Materials”, “Mobility”. All sections cover German discoveries in science and technology. Visitors will learn about Germany as the land of research and discover opportunities it offers for study, work, and life.

“Various exchanges between our countries, Russia and Germany, have been flourishing in recent years. They involve such areas as linguistics, history, culture, economics, and others. This is how it should continue in the future. Knowledge of English is a must for every modern person while speaking German is a great benefit. Everyone at the Institute of Foreign Languages speaks English at different levels. Yet if you additionally speak German it means you can offer additional set of skills at the labor market. Throughout our marathon we will reiterate that proficiency in German is now in demand all across Russia,” said Inna Kreneva, Director of the Institute of Foreign Languages.

The first visitors to the exhibition were the 1st year students of the German language program, while their senior colleagues, the 3rd year students, gave them a tour. The fresh students had to complete tasks in different knowledge areas. The tour closed with a quiz on German scientists and their discoveries.

The exhibition works in the Reading Hall of the Scientific Library of PetrSU in the Academic Building No.2 (ul. Pravdy, 1).

The Institute will also host integrated classes (MINT system) and quizzes on life and work of Alexander von Humboldt for schoolchildren of Petrozavodsk prepared by the students of the IFL during their teaching practices; a roundtable discussion following a screening of German-language film Changing the World” / “Die Vermessung der Welt”; a class for the IFL students “Activities around Germany poster”.
