PetrSU Introduced to Blended Learning of Foreign Languages
The Institute of Foreign Languages of PetrSU hosted a seminar on modern technologies of teaching foreign languages in European practice.
The seminar was moderated by the guest of PetrSU Doctor Klaus Waschik, Executive Director of the Institute of Intensive Language Training (LSI) (part of Ruhr-Universitat Bochum, Germany).
Ruhr-Universitat Bochum is one of the largest research centers in Germany, while the Institute of Intensive Language Training teaches German elite, including politicians and cosmonauts. The academic staff of LSI is ready for methodological and technological challenges that arise in the context of personalization and intensification of foreign language teaching. Among these challenges are the introduction of artificial intelligence into the study process. In their courses, LSI that has 40 years of experience demonstrates an efficient opportunity to learn practical proficiency in a foreign language. Annually over 1000 people graduate from the Institute. LSI program includes the German, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Korean languages and several other foreign languages.
Dr. Waschik introduced the participants of the seminar to the resources and capabilities of the LSI.online platform developed by the team of LSI. The platform offers various forms of studying: blended learning, e-learning, and hybrid education, which emphasizes distance learning combined with a small portion of in-class learning under the guidance of a teacher. At the meeting, the participants of the seminar discussed the role of “digital mini-products”, such as educational videos and presentations on the Internet and whether they can serve as an alternative to traditional teacher; feasibility of merging “smart support systems” (navigators) with traditional educational systems; the concept of “transparent student” that involves logging students’ activities in studying a foreign language on the platform of the Institute.
At the seminar, Dr. Klaus Waschik, fluent in the Russian language, presented features and conceptual basis of LSI.online platform that is different from other educational platforms (like Moodle). He also engaged the participants in a discussion about the change in the role of a teacher, who is not just translating knowledge, as it is customary in stationary education, but he also provides support, maintains discipline, acts as an organizer or even as an entertainer during the study process.
