A Meeting with Researcher from Spain Inés Lozano-Palacio
Inés Lozano-Palacio, PhD in English Philology of Valencia Polytechnic University, cognitive researcher met with PetrSU students and teachers online.
The online lecture focused on irony as a figure of speech, in particular, on the relationship between it and such stylistic phenomena as prolepsis, antiphrasis, and sarcasm. This topic was hardly the fortuitous since cognitive linguistics, irony has always received much less attention than metaphor, metonymy, and other tropes and figures. Inés Lozano-Palacio represented and described in depth various factors influencing irony understanding and interpretation, defined their role in studying this phenomenon from the perspective of Cognitive Modelling.
Feedback received from participants of the meeting:
Nadezhda Krylova, Associate Professor of the Department of English Language of the Institute of Foreign Languages of PetrSU, Candidate of Philological Sciences:
"Seminars provided by Inés Lozano-Palacio are of utmost important and interesting: this is really a profoundly scientific approach to irony as a well-known figure of speech. Researcher presents the phenomenon in the range of its content and functional characteristics: irony and culture, irony and discursive communities, interactions between the ironic and interpreters, etc. Such seminars let both teachers and students broaden their knowledge of specific areas of linguistics, look at contemporary language material via dynamic picture of the world and aspects of intercultural communication. The lecturer’s ability to tell in a simple and comprehensive way about complex cognitive realities and processes is amazing. We look forward to further cooperation within the framework of linguistic meetings and seminars".
Maria Kuznetsova, 3rd year student of the Institute of Foreign Languages of PetrSU:
"Although some of the aspects seemed to me difficult from a linguistic point of view, it was insightful to listen to the lecture. I would like to note lecturer’s articulate pronunciation, her interest in this topic".
Daria Georgievskaya, 1st year student of the Institute of Foreign Languages of PetrSU:
"Despite the fact that I study French as principal language, it was very easy for me to understand what we were talking about. Great presentation, nice pronunciation and the information I received was very comprehensive and interesting. I listened to the lecture with great pleasure".
This meeting was organized jointly by the English discussion club of PetrSU "Debaters Today, Leaders Tomorrow" and the Student Scientific Society of PetrSU.
