The Institute of Foreign Languages announced the results of the student projects contest “Famous People of Tübingen” (“Bekannte Persönlichkeiten in Tübingen”) dedicated to the sister-city of the Karelian capital in Germany.

The contest was organized by the Department of the German and French Languages of the Institute of Foreign Languages of PetrSU with the support of the West-East Society (Federal Republic of Germany, Tübingen).

For many years the Institute of Foreign Languages has been developing fruitful cooperation with the West-East Society, which contributed to the organization of various cultural, social, and cross-cultural projects both in Petrozavodsk and the German sister-city. The partners have decided to continue the cooperation virtually.

The participants of the project “Famous People of Tübingen” were the 2nd year students of the Institute of Foreign Languages, program “Teacher Education”, specialization “German Language and English Language”.

During the spring semester, the students have been working on a project in pairs and small groups, collecting information about renowned representatives of the city of Tübingen who played a prominent role in the public, political, historical, scientific, or cultural life of the sister-city and made a considerable contribution to the German and global science. The end products were the scientific reports in the German language accompanied by a presentation. The representatives of the eight groups had their choice of a person to present.

At the contest, the participants had every opportunity to showcase their knowledge and creativity, demonstrate their level of proficiency in the German language and multimedia skills. During the presentations, the students introduced the audience to renowned representatives of the scientific community of Tübingen such as biochemists Adolf Friedrich Butenandt and Gerhard Schramm, natural scientists Johann Georg Gmelin and Carl Friedrich von Martius, physiologist Friedrich Miescher, chemist Gustav von Hüfner, and other prominent figures who have left their mark on the history of the city. Despite the limitations of the presentation format, all contestants successfully presented the information to the audience.

The jury consisted of the Director of the Institute of Foreign Languages Inna Kreneva, the Head of the Department of the German and French Languages Irina Kotyurova, senior teacher of the Department Olga Nikolaeva, and the Chairperson of the West-East Society Lilia Künstle. The jury assessed the presentation against the set criteria (content and scientific credibility, correctness and creativity) and unanimously awarded the prizes as follows:

The 1st place: Margarita Vernigorova, Serafima Smirnova, Polina Ishkova (report “Carl Friedrich von Martius”); Vadim Luzyanin, Olga Khitrova (report “Friedrich Miescher”)

The 2nd place: Ekaterina Molodkina, Anastasiya Kravtsova (report “Adolf Friedrich Butenandt”)

The 3rd place: Kseniya Ankudinova, Yulia Ignasheva (report “Gerhard Schramm”).

We congratulate all the participants and prize-winners of the contest. We hope that these events become a good tradition, which motivates students to broaden their linguistic horizons.
