The Third Russian-Chinese School for the Study of Arctic Problems Opened at PetrSU
The conference project was formulated by St. Petersburg University back in 2010, and the first Russian-Chinese school was held in 2019.
Director of the Arctic Center of PetrSU Anton Kovshov said that close ties have long been established between China and PetrSU:
“PetrSU has signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Fujian Province. Our students study Chinese. With regard to the development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, it is important to attract investment in projects for the extraction of mineral resources, the development of transport corridors, and the Northern Sea Route. Because we have difficult conditions for shipping in the Arctic. We are also talking about investments in the ice fleet. The first transit flights have already been carried out by a Chinese company.
Scientific Director of the Institute of North European and Arctic Studies of PetrSU Valery Shlyamin gave a lecture on the prospects for the development of Russian-Chinese economic cooperation, in particular with Karelia. He noted that Chinese partners today are the main partners of Russia and Karelia.
Over the course of three days, participants in the Russian-Chinese School for the Study of Arctic Problems will discuss the development of cultural, scientific ties and tourism between the two countries.
