PetrSU International Students Received Clarification on Migration Legislation and Security Issues

22 December 2025
During the fall semester of the 2025/26 academic year, Petrozavodsk State University hosted a series of meetings between international students and representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karelia.

Over 350 foreign citizens from various years and fields of study participated in the events.

The meetings were organized to provide legal information to international students and prevent potential violations. Staff from the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karelia provided detailed information on Russian migration legislation, the rules for the stay of foreign citizens, and the responsibilities necessary for safe and comfortable living and studying in Russia.

The Head of the Permit and Visa Department of the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karelia emphasized the importance of strict compliance with the law and drew students' attention to the consequences of potential violations.

An employee of the Center for Combating Extremism of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karelia spoke about the consequences of extremism among young people. He warned students about the dangers of rash actions and possible involvement in illegal activities. Using specific examples, the operative explained the proper course of action when receiving dubious offers of part-time work, including online.

A separate section of the meeting was devoted to road safety. Given the winter season, shorter daylight hours, and challenging weather conditions, a Karelia State Traffic Inspectorate officer reminded students of the need to comply with traffic regulations. Students were also informed about the importance of reflective elements for improving visibility on the roads; at the end of the meeting, participants were presented with reflectors.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karelia regularly conducts similar events, assisting foreign citizens, increasing their legal literacy, and helping prevent offenses.

The management of Petrozavodsk State University expresses its gratitude to the staff of the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karelia for organizing the meetings at a high level of organization. The events generated great interest among the audience: students listened attentively, particularly noting the usefulness of the videos and handouts prepared specifically for them. Overall, the series of meetings was informative and productive, contributing to the international students' adaptation, enhancing their legal awareness, and strengthening cooperation between PetrSU and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Karelia.
