The White Sea coast has become a traditional place for PetrSU biologists who for almost 10 years study conditions, ecologic and functional characteristics of phototrophic organisms who habituate an unstable area: tidal wetlands of the White Sea.

This year on July 1-10 teachers (Professor Anzhella Sonina, Professor Evgenia Markovskaya, Associate Professor Elena Terebova), postgraduates (Elena Guliaeva, Ksenia Taskina) and students (Maria Pavlova, Anna Uspenskaya, Alisa Lonina, Yaroslav Grechko) of the Department of Botany and Plant Physiology studied functioning of coastal biota in the Kem River estuary in the vicinity of Rabocheostrovsk village of the Kem region.

The Kem region alongside the Belomorsky and Loukhsky regions are included in the Arctic areas hence the particular interest in researching this area among scientists of the Flagship University of Karelia.

The study was carried out within the expedition “Karelian Pomorie – 2019” and concerned structure of plant communities, anatomic, morphological and physiological characteristics of species predominant in the coastal vegetative cover. The researchers also looked into the reaction of plants on contamination in the constantly unstable environment, which is daily flooded by seawater and dried.

The Kem River is a large, water-abundant river with rapids and unusually long estuary (over 10 km) alongside which the team established test sites and carried out the research. The students were introduced to field trip experience when one has to carry on their backs kilograms of the “haul” of the expedition across rocks and coastline. The participants of the expedition collected extensive material on species diversity of plants and lichens on the coast of the White Sea near Rabocheostrovsk village, took samples of soil, water, vegetative organs of plants and lichen thallomes to perform chemical analysis, collected plant samples for morphological, anatomical and physiological laboratory studies.

During the expedition, PetrSU botanists established contacts with teachers of Rabocheostrovsk general school (director Albina Smirnova). The university teachers consulted on the organization of research for schoolchildren, agreed on closer cooperation between the Department of Botany and Plant Physiology of PetrSU and teachers and pupils of the school, namely in the organization of an ecologic tour on the school territory for junior schoolchildren and an ecology path on the coastal area in Robocheostrovsk.
