PetrSU Student Elizaveta Makarova is the Karelia TV Channel Veps Speaking Newscaster
In the 60 years of the Karelia State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company, this was the first newscast in the Veps language.
Broadcasting in Veps has started back in the 80s, yet the audience has been offered only topical programs and news stories. Now the Karelia TV Channel will broadcast a whole news block.
The newscaster Elizaveta Makarova has come to Karelia from Murmansk and is now studying for the 4th year at the Department of Baltic and Finnish Philology of PetrSU. To make it in time for the 9 a.m. news broadcast, Elizaveta woke up at 5.30 in the morning.
“I was very nervous as I was afraid to make a mistake, worried about my first broadcast. Our job is very exciting, we meet interesting people. It also provides an extensive language practice,” shared her thoughts the student.
The news in the Veps language is relevant for 3500 language speakers residing in the Republic. These are mostly denizens of the Prionezhsky region: villages of Rybreka, Sheltozero, Shoksha.
The Veps news is broadcasted on weekdays at 9 a.m.
The first newscast is available at the link.
