PetrSU took part in the conference Arctic Frontiers in Tromso (Norway).

On January 26-30, 2020, the city of Tromso hosted the ARCTIC FRONTIERS THE POWER OF KNOWLEDGE 2020.

The Arctic Frontiers is a global scientific conference on sustainable economic, social and ecological development in the Arctic, which was held for the 14th time. The Arctic Frontiers is a forum for dialogue and communication between the scientific community, industry, and government.

The plenary meeting featured reports by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway Ine Eriksen Søreide, the Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of Finland Ville Skinnari, the Minister for Higher Education and Research of Sweden Matilda Ernkrans.

PetrSU was represented by Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor of the Department of World History, Political and Social Sciences, chairperson of the committee of the Public Chamber of the Republic of Karelia for science and education, Mariya Pitukhina. At the conference, Mariya Pitukhina held negotiations about the promotion of the project Arctic Migration Index to be reviewed by the Sustainable Development Working Group of the Arctic Council.

The project Arctic Migration Index, which will last 1,5 years, will study four types of migration flows in the member states of the Arctic Council (foreign labor migration, educational migration, holiday migration, and retirement migration). Among the aims of the project is the assessment of the best foreign practices in the area of migration; calculation of Arctic Migration Index for the member states of the Arctic Council; analysis of mechanisms of conflict resolution in rights of small indigenous peoples of the North in the context of the increase in labor migration in the Arctic.

At the conference, Mariya Pitukhina met with the head of the Russian delegation, the Ambassador at Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia for the international cooperation in the Arctic Nikolay Korchunov.

“Mr. Korchunov said that Russia will vote in support of the project at the meeting of the Sustainable Development Working Group in Iceland at the end of March 2020. For the successful promotion of the project, we still have to solve many crucial issues, including securing financial support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia of the Russian participants of the project,” Mariya shared her plans.
