PetrSU Student Engaged in Research Project in Ecology
Pavel Kipriyanov, a student of the Institute of Biology, Ecology and Agricultural Technologies of PetrSU, has studied in Finland for a semester.
Pavel Kipriyanov, the 4th year student of the program Water Bioresources and Aquaculture, has spent the autumn semester of 2019 studying on exchange at the University of Eastern Finland in the city of Joensuu.
The university has over 13 000 students and offers various Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree programs. Pavel has studied biology, ecology, management, has taken a crash course in the Finnish language and other courses. In the student’s view, the highlight of his exchange program was participation in a research project in the area of ecology, ecotoxicology, and evolutionary biology.
“The idea of the project is to analyze the effect of nanoplastic particles on whitefish eggs. All eggs were divided into three groups: the control group, a group with nanoplastic particles at low concentrations, and a group with nanoplastic particles at high concentrations. On January 22, 2020, we received the first spawns. All hatchlings will be tested for swimming ability. The project holds much promise in a view of the extensive pollution of the world’s oceans with plastic waste,” explains Pavel.
