PetrSU studies the "green technologies" effectiveness in house construction in the Arctic Region.

A house in the Arctic region - what should it be? Scientists from Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway jointly study this issue. The aim is to create convenient living conditions for people, but with minimal negative environmental impact.

Scientists from PetrSU and Murmansk State Technical University, within the international project KO 1089 "Green Construction in the Arctic Region" under the Kolarctic Cross-Border Cooperation Program, have developed a laboratory model to test "green technologies" and assess their work effectiveness in the northern territories.

Such a laboratory has already been established at the Botanical Garden of PetrSU.

The laboratory is a 12x6m one-story building made with wooden house construction technologies, equipped with energy-efficient engineering equipment, as well as a special monitoring research system. Sensor system is installed in the walls, which allows to monitor temperature and humidity indicators, in particular, to assess thermal energy losses.

Alexander Kuzmenkov, project manager at PetrSU, Associate Professor of the Department of Technology and Construction Organization, Candidate of Economic Sciences, noted:

"We want to assess whether there are further prospects for the development of constructions towards active houses (buildings with a positive energy balance, "energy plus" buildings which produce more than enough energy for their own needs) and passive houses (the main peculiarity of these buildings is low energy consumption due to the use of passive energy saving methods).
It might be of interest for those people who intend to build a house and make up their mind what will the house look like, what material will it be made of, what engineering systems should be there. It also may be interesting forprefab house manufacturers considering what to target in the market".
