Vepsian Youth Community Vepsän Vezad: Meeting on the Day of the Epic "Kalevala"
Kalevala Day is celebrated in Finland and Karelia every year on February 28. Before the celebrations, on February 27, the friendship house of the peoples of Karelia hosted the meeting named Kalevalan päivä. The meeting was organised by the members of community Vepsän Vezad with participation of the students and graduates of the Department of Baltic and Finnish Philology.
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students of the Department of Baltic and Finnish Philology with speciality in "Finnish Language and Literature, Vepsian Language" and "Finnish Language and Literature, Karelian Language " participated in the meeting.
The organisers lectured on Elias Lönnrot and told about his contribution to the Vepsian Language, then held an engaging Kalevala epos quiz.
"It is the second year since Vepsian Youth Community Vepsän Vezad has arranged thematic meetings for students of the Department of Baltic and Finnish Philology on the Kalevala Day. It becomes a good tradition. We believe that these events promote the popularization of the Karelian indigenous peoples’ culture among students as well as help them plunge into cultural and social life of the department",
said Maria Kosheleva, a teacher of the Department.
