Maria Lukashevich, Irina Fedorova and Irina Chepurina, the senior lecturers of the Department of German Philology and Scandinavian Studies participated in the research online symposia dedicated to the issues of distance learning "Change Is the Only Constant: Sharing Experiences of Teaching, Learning, and Research in Times of Disruption". Center for Learning and Research at Vancouver Community College hosted the meeting.

The symposium was held via Zoom and convened about 200 teachers with an aim to discuss the major issues of distance learning, the new ways of the virtual learning organisation, as well as share the experience with the colleagues from other countries. The symposium program was very insightful and included extensive theoretical and illustrating input. The participation of the sign interpreters showed not only transparency of the meeting, but also its significance.

The meeting featured such the important issues as the student's reluctance to turn on the camera during the lesson, the assessment of the student whose microphone does not work, the creation of a favorable emotional atmosphere in the lesson, and the identification of students who feel psychological discomfort during online learning. To provide a working atmosphere in the classroom it was considered to create a questionnaire containing questions about the student’s technical equipment, as well as possible questions regarding embarrassment, fear, uncertainty.

The questionnaire is sent to a group of students before the lesson and is filled out anonymously.

The participation in the symposium allowed to form a holistic view of the distance learning.
