Seminar "The Chinese Genius of Pushkin"

09 June 2025
On June 6 2025, on the Day of the Russian Language and the birthday of the great Russian poet A.S. Pushkin, the Institute of Philology, together with the Petrozavodsk State Conservatory named after A.K. Glazunov and partner universities from China - Harbin University and Dalian Polytechnic University - held the 2nd cultural, educational and poetic seminar "The Chinese Genius of Pushkin". The event was first held in 2024, and then all its participants agreed that an annual format was needed.

The seminar was held by the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language and Applied Linguistics.

The participants were 1st-3rd year students of the Institute of Philology studying in the field of training "Russian as a foreign language, Chinese language", students of the Petrozavodsk State Conservatory, 3rd year students of the Russian language faculty of Harbin University, master's students of the specialty "Applied and foreign linguistics" of the Institute of Foreign Languages of Dalian Polytechnic University, as well as university teachers and guests - more than 60 people in total; online connection with China was conducted on the Voovmeeting platform, the venue was "Boiling Point - Petrozavodsk".

A distinctive feature of this year's seminar was an appeal to the texts of famous Chinese poets of the 20th century, whose work had a significant influence on the development of Chinese poetry - Ai Qing, Dai Wanshu, Xu Zhimo, Hai Zi, Hui Wa.

This became a profound symbolic gesture, a tribute to the great Chinese culture, which has been carefully treating the creative legacy of A.S. Pushkin for over a century. The first monument to a foreign writer unveiled in China was the monument to A.S. Pushkin in Shanghai, erected in 1937 by Russian emigrants in honor of the 100th anniversary of Pushkin's death. Let us recall that from 1993 to 1999, three full-length Collected Works of Pushkin were published in China (in 7, 10 and 12 volumes), and the novel in verse "Eugene Onegin" had already had 15 translations by 2023, although, as aptly noted by Professor Wang Lie of Beijing University of Foreign Languages, member of the Chinese Association for the Study of Russian Literature, "translating Pushkin is an incredibly difficult task and it is impossible to talk about 100% success." The hosts, first-year students of group 12103 Milana Ageeva and Albina Nefedova, talked about the facets of A.S. Pushkin's work and introduced Chinese poets.

Poetic works by A.S. Pushkin, lyrical texts by Chinese poets were recited in Russian and Chinese; in total, more than 20 texts, including Pushkin's famous "I love you, even though I'm furious", "If life deceives you", "Storm", "I remember a wonderful moment", "Flower", "If life deceives you", "To friends", "What's in my name", "Winter morning", "You and you", Onegin's letter to Tatyana from the novel "Eugene Onegin" and other works.

A pleasant surprise for those present was a video recording sent from China - a video postcard, in which master's students from the Institute of Foreign Languages of Dalian Polytechnic University recorded an introduction to the poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila" against the backdrop of the magnificent scenery of Dalianwan Bay of the Yellow Sea at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula.

The Institute of Philology expresses gratitude to all participants, as well as colleagues who provided active assistance in preparing students: Foreign Expert of the Russian Language Faculty of the Institute of Foreign Languages of Dalian Polytechnic University N.S. Kasyuk, Teacher of the Russian Language Faculty of Harbin University D.A. Tishchenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Music Pedagogy and Humanities of the Petrozavodsk State Conservatory named after A.K. Glazunov E.A. Velikanova.
