Petrozavodsk State University is one of the world study centers of Dostoevsky's heritage.

The canonical complete set of Dostoevsky’s works and the journal Unknown Dostoevsky (Neizvestny Dostoevsky), credentialed by the world community and included in the WoS and Scopus databases, is being published under the editorship of Vladimir Zakharov, the Honorary President of the International Dostoevsky Society, Full Professor, the Head of Department of Classic Philology, Russian Literature and Journalism of the Institute of Philology. For the writer’s anniversary, university researchers have published 5 monographs under grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. It has become an important event both for the international and Russian Dostoevsky-studies. On November 8-9, there was the International Conference "Prospects for Studying the Legacy of Dostoevsky", which convened more than 50 scientists from PetrSU and other Russian and international universities and scientific organizations.

The name of Fyodor Dostoevsky is well-known all over the world. He is that kind of a writer whose books become a reason to learn Russian in order to read them in the original language. Dostoevsky's word is a power, capable of changing a person, influencing people. Dostoevsky's first piece of writing became a huge sensation. Subsequently, in the reviews, he will be called not by his name, but as "the author of the Poor Folk.

Dostoevsky's life path always seemed to be divided into two parts: before Katorga labor and after, before meeting Anna Snitkina and after... Dostoevsky devoted his life to the study of a human, trying to learn the secret of their spirit. Dostoevsky, a Christian writer, reveals the beauty of the world to his readers.

There was another important branch in the Dostoevsky’s work: he dived into journalism in the 60s. Publishing the Vremya (“Time”) magazine, Dostoevsky considered it to be a “new word”. His main ideological conviction was Pochvennichestvo (Russian movement supported the complete emancipation of serfdom and desired to return to the idealized past of Russian history).

The Great Five Dostoevsky's Books (Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, The Adolescent, The Brothers Karamazov), large-scale both in volume and in depth of thought, still do not leave readers indifferent wherever they are from. Dostoevsky believed that suffering is life, the more a person suffers, the better they become.

Dostoevsky's birth anniversary is a global event. Interest in his books contributed to the creation of the International Dostoevsky Society in 1971.
